Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs are web maps to navigate a user’s location in a website or web application. They are visible in a horizontal line at the top of a webpage. This improves the usability of a website, especially in the case of large websites. Breadcrumbs are not suggested on small websites with no logical hierarchy or grouping. To understand if Breadcrumb is helpful, create a sitemap representing the website’s navigation. Then, analyse whether breadcrumbs will improve website’s usability. Breadcrumbs reduce the bounce rates of websites. Especially for first-time visitors, they tempt users to hang on to the site after viewing the landing page Google search uses breadcrumbs to categorise the information from the page in search results. Thus, it impacts search engine ranking and traffic of websites. Still, breadcrumbs are secondary navigation and should not replace primary navigation menus.
