Breadcrumb Navigation

What is Breadcrumb Navigation?

Breadcrumb navigation is one of the website’s features that shows users their current location within the site’s hierarchy. This feature appears on the top of the web page and is placed horizontally so that users can understand where they are now and which page comes next if they click on those links separated by different symbols like arrows, greater than, or bars.

Even though they are known as secondary navigation features, they can be useful in improving user experience and reducing bounce rates as much as they can. Further, they can be very handy for boosting search engine rankings.

Let’s take an example of Myntra’s website. They have arranged sections for women and the types of dresses every woman wants to look at. If you choose ethnic wear or Kurtis, you may have come across the following navigation feature, which is known as the breadcrumb navigation.

  • Home / Clothing / Women Clothing / Women Ethnic Wear
  • Home / Clothing / Kurtis For Women

The texts within the bars are links that can direct you to each webpage. If you choose “Home”, you will be redirected to Myntra’s home page. This follows the same for other options and also other websites.
