Featured Snippet

What is a Featured Snippet?

A featured snippet is a short answer box that shows up at the very top of a search results page. It features a snippet of content from a webpage and helps users get the answer to their query without visiting the webpage. The featured snippet is often called ‘Position Zero’, as it comes at the top of all other pages. Featured snippets can be a paragraph, a list, a table, or a video, depending on the query. The primary purpose of a featured snippet is to give users a ready-to-use answer.

Why Featured Snippets matter?

Featured snippets matter because they improve user experience as well as website visibility. They offer several advantages to both users and websites. Some of the benefits featured snippets offer are :

1. Instant Answers

Featured snippets provide instant answers to queries. Users don’t need to open multiple websites or scroll through long pages. This makes the search easier and convenient, especially for users looking for an immediate answer.

2. Increased Visibility

For a website, featured snippets help in high visibility. If a page is chosen for a featured snippet, the page will appear at position zero, the top of a search results page. This way, websites at rank 5 or 6 or even lower can reach the top without being ranked 1 and attract viewers.

3. High CTR (Click-Through Rates)

Many users click on the top results that appear on a search results page. When featured snippets are shown, users click the highlighted webpage to get more information. Featured snippets often act as a preview of the source website.

4. Builds Trust

Google selects content from the most relevant and helpful webpages. If Google selected your website for a featured snippet, it means your content is clear, relevant, and accurate. This creates strong credibility and authority.

5. Voice Search

Virtual assistants like Google Assistant read aloud content from featured snippets. If your content is snippet-friendly, it will likely be shown as answers for voice search queries.

Types of Featured Snippets

  1. Paragraph Snippet

This is the most common type of featured snippet. A short block of text is displayed that is relevant to the query. It is shown when the user is asking for a definition, meaning, or an explanation. It gives a direct and simple answer.

If you search “what is SEO?”, you may see a 2-3 sentence definition at the top.

  1. List Snippet

A bulleted or numbered list of answers appears for queries like “how-to”, steps, and recipes. These show a stepwise instruction to do something or a list of something needed.

For example, if the query is “what are the important aspects of digital marketing”, Google may show a bulleted list containing core aspects of digital marketing.

  1. Table Snippet

For ranking, schedule, price lists, comparisons, and other data-heavy topics, Google extracts data from websites and displays it in table format.

For a query like “compiled vs interpreted languages”, a table will be displayed with different features of compiled and interpreted languages compared, along with examples.

  1. Video Snippet

For educational, DIY queries or for tutorials, Google may show a YouTube video with key timestamps for your query.

If you search “how to pronounce Volkswagen” or “how to do triple integration”, you may see a video that explains the concepts and how to do it. Google will highlight the video segment required for your query.

Featured snippets are less common today as AI overviews are shown at the top for queries. Still, featured snippets are shown for simple, fact-based queries.
