Designing a coherent and relevant User Interface is a big challenge. There are several factors you need to consider in order to give it that ideal look and feel which will help your users connect with it. Until that is established, your interface does not really gain any ground. In this context, take a look at some of the attributes that should be part of the skill portfolio of every UI Designer.
Table of Contents
Making your interface user focused is most important. In other words, understanding user requirements and addressing those needs through your design is what leads to the usability quotient of your product. In fact, without a focus on your target user group your design is deemed incomplete. Their opinions, feedback and needs analysis will help you move to build a more effective user interface design.
One of the primary user needs which universally appeals to all users is simplicity. Users will access your product for a specific need. If they are able to satiate that need quickly, easily and through simple methods, then they consider your product development efforts a success. Moreover, as your interface is the gateway to your product keep it as simple as possible. Easy navigation, intelligent positioning of text and graphic elements of your content, a well-defined site map are some of the ways in which you can simplify your interface. Let your interface provide answers to your users and not pose new questions. Avoid use of fancy functionalities which, though good to look at, may confuse the user. It may intimidate them and drive traffic away from your product.
Human Intelligence is best inspired by speech and text is nothing but speech in the written form. It is therefore very crucial that you use the right kind of copy for your interface. You may be a literary genius and be able to compose lines of flawless text. However, if that fails to resonate with your audience’s need, it is rendered redundant. Therefore, it is not the quantity, but rather the quality of the copy that matter. Research thoroughly on what your audience needs, analyze your findings and let your creative juices flow in order to create the appropriate copy.
With the growing fad for Responsive Designs it is foolish, not to factor that in when you are designing your interface. As more and more new devices are beginning to throng the market offering varied viewing experiences to customers, designers are finding it quite challenging to customize designs for existing products. Therefore, educate yourself and follow the responsive web design (RWD) best practices on the different devices being launched and make sure you include the every essential characteristics of responsive designs.
Other than the design aspects, your interface is also impacted by your team dynamics. While working with multiple people it is very crucial to manage the dynamics. Learn to handle feedback, both positive and negative as it plays a major role in creating effective designs. Team members should justify their reasons for accepting or rejecting a particular design idea. That helps to avoid mis-communication and facilitates a healthy atmosphere of collaboration.
Your interface, no matter how perfect, will require updates in order to remain relevant. Take note of the aspects mentioned in every revision and work towards developing a more perfect User Interface design.
